Blind-specific tech — readers, labelers & braille input

Orbit Writer Braille Keyboard

Orbit Writer (Orbit Research) — about $150 · star rating unverified in our research; the blind-tech review site Screenless Allies gave it 4 out of 5 · Blind pick for braille readers — a pocket-size Perkins-style braille keyboard that pairs with your phone over Bluetooth, so you type in braille instead of hunting the glass.

Six braille keys plus space and navigation keys in the layout your fingers already know, quiet scissor keys with positive tactile feedback, and haptic vibration for notifications from your phone. It pairs with up to five devices over Bluetooth plus one over USB, and works with iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, ChromeOS, and Fire OS — it even presents itself as a braille display so screen readers that don't know it still work with it.

The honest comparison: the Hable One (about $299) is sturdier and handles braille translation on-device, but costs twice as much; a full 20-cell braille display ($1,400+) lets you read braille too, which is why it costs ten times more. The Writer is input-only — typing, not reading. Reviewers' caveat: the vibration patterns and chorded settings commands take real learning. If you already read braille and want to text and email at speed, this is the cheapest serious way in.
