About The Blind Bridge

In short

The Blind Bridge is a buying guide for blind shoppers, built by a blind shopper. Too many product ratings are bought — coupons and discount codes in exchange for five stars — and too much good knowledge never gets shared at all.

Every pick here is judged one way: can you actually use it without sight? The site is always free for readers; it earns from the business side, never from the people it exists to help.

The Bridge Builder, by Will Allen Dromgoole. An old man, going a lone highway, Came, at the evening, cold and gray, To a chasm, vast, and deep, and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim; The sullen stream had no fear for him; But he turned, when safe on the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide. Old man, said a fellow pilgrim, near, You are wasting strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day; You never again will pass this way; You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide — Why build you this bridge at the evening tide? The builder lifted his old gray head: Good friend, in the path I have come, he said, There followeth after me today, A youth, whose feet must pass this way. This chasm, that has been naught to me, To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him.

Why I built this

When I went blind, I found that the stores couldn't help me and the websites couldn't either. Walk into a Best Buy or a Walmart with a real question about a product and nobody knows anything anymore — their best answer is to tell you to go look at the website. And if the website isn't accessible, or doesn't answer the specific question you actually have, then it's not useful. Just like the store wasn't either.

At some point "somebody should build this" became "I'm going to build this."

"Sometimes you can't wait for someone else to do what needs doing — you have to step up and do it yourself. If it helps one person, it's worth it."

If I figure something out, or research my way to a solution, it goes on here — because it might solve somebody else's problem too, and nobody thought to put it out there before.

The site wasn't originally meant to be the bridge — it grew into the name while we were building it.

Why you can trust it

I learned to read online ratings with suspicion — too many are bought with coupons and discount codes. Nothing here is sponsored, and rankings can't be bought.

What the trainers don't know

I've spent a lot of time teaching the people who were supposed to be teaching me. My trainers at the state vocational rehab agency learned new tools and approaches from me — things they'd never heard of, that their other clients needed. I taught my own cane instructor about the Dakota disc — a cane tip he'd never heard of.

"The people trained to teach us don't always know everything about our perspective."

Who this is for

This site is for blind shoppers — especially the ones who aren't VoiceOver experts yet. You shouldn't need to master the rotor to buy a microwave with confidence. I'll be honest: right now it's strongest for iPhone users. That's where I live, and that's where the work started.

Who I am

In 2021 I had a normal life and a good career. Then I went blind — in a matter of days. As I understand it, a massive blood clot cut off my optic nerves. The doctors call it pseudotumor cerebri, which is a real diagnosis, but in my case it names no cause.

"The doctors call it pseudotumor cerebri — a fancy doctor-word that, in my case, means 'we don't know.'"

A lot of people don't share good knowledge when they have it. I'm a bridge builder, not a gatekeeper.
