Talking Recorders & Reading Devices — a 40-cell braille workstation

Orbit Strata 40 Braille Display and Note-Taker

The verdict

Orbit Strata 40 — about $2,595 from Orbit Research · star rating unverified in our research · a 40-cell braille display and standalone note-taker with piezo cells and a Perkins-style keyboard.

The Strata 40 is Orbit Research's step up from the Orbit Reader family: 40 eight-dot refreshable braille cells with cursor routing keys, a Perkins-style keyboard, and piezo braille cells rather than Orbit's usual TrueBraille mechanism. In standalone mode it is a full note-taker — book reader, file editor, clock, calendar, and calculator — reading and editing BRF, BRL, and text files from its own storage, with onboard forward and backward braille translation in more than 70 languages. Connected over Bluetooth or USB it becomes a braille display for a phone or computer with a screen reader.

For a braille reader, the 40-cell width is the point: a full line of text at once instead of the 20-cell compromise, which matters for reading books, editing documents, and working with structured material. Cursor routing keys let you jump straight to a character, and the four-way cursor pad, thumb keys, and panning keys give precise navigation without reaching for a separate keyboard. Switching between reader, note-taker, and display modes is instant.

Honest caveats: at $2,595 this is a professional or educational purchase, not a casual buy — check state VR, school, or employer funding before paying out of pocket, and compare with the Orbit Reader 40 already in this catalog if budget is the deciding factor. Piezo cells feel different from Orbit's TrueBraille cells, so try before you buy if you have strong cell-feel preferences. As of October 2026 Orbit Research lists the Strata 40 as a current product.
