HumanWare Explore 8
The verdict
The Explore 8 is HumanWare's large-screen handheld video magnifier: an 8-inch HD touchscreen, twin 21-megapixel cameras — one for reading documents up close, one for distance viewing like street and store signs — magnification from 2X to 30X, and 17 customizable color contrast modes. It has large physical buttons for magnification and contrast alongside the touchscreen, a folding alloy stand for table reading, HDMI output to a TV, and about 4.5 hours of battery life at 580 grams (about 1.3 pounds).

Blind details
For a low-vision reader, the honest framing matters: this is a magnification device, not a reading machine — it makes print bigger, it does not read it aloud, so it suits someone with residual vision who wants to keep reading mail, menus, medication labels, and newspapers themselves. The big screen is the point: compared with 5-inch handhelds, you see more words per glance and scroll less, and the distance camera means the same device reads a restaurant menu and a bus-stop sign.
Honest caveats: $1,299 buys the device only; the kit with the stand runs about $1,549. It does not do OCR or text-to-speech, so a totally blind user should look at a talking book player instead. Check whether insurance, a state agency, or the VA will help with the cost before paying out of pocket, and no star rating was verified in our research. As of October 2026.
