Freedom Scientific RUBY 10
The verdict
The RUBY 10 is Freedom Scientific's largest portable video magnifier: a 10-inch touchscreen with three dedicated cameras for reading, distance viewing, and self-viewing, magnifying from 2X to 24X. It is sold with or without text-to-speech; the speech version reads printed pages aloud, and it can send its picture to an external display over Miracast or USB.
Freedom Scientific RUBY 10 — about $1,845 at New England Low Vision · star rating unverified in our research · Low vision pick (needs some usable vision) — the 10-inch portable video magnifier with a speech option, for low-vision readers who want a big, stable reading screen they can carry from room to room.
A fold-out stand holds it over a book or magazine, and a carrying case and screen cleaning cloth come in the box.

Blind details
Low vision pick means the core task requires some usable vision, and this product stands out for low-vision readers. For a blind or low-vision reader, the RUBY 10's size is the point: at 10 inches, a whole paragraph stays on screen at once instead of a few words sliding past, so you read with far less panning than on a pocket magnifier. The speech version matters even more — when your eyes tire, you can switch from magnified reading to listening without changing devices, and the three cameras mean one device covers mail on the table, labels in the kitchen, and a whiteboard across the room. Learn the physical buttons before relying on the touchscreen, since buttons are findable by touch and the screen is not.

Honest caveats: This is a low-vision magnifier, not a tool for someone with no usable vision — if you cannot read magnified print, the speech version helps only with printed text, not with screens or handwriting. At 2.02 pounds it is portable, not pocketable, and 3.5 hours of continuous use means heavy readers should plan charging breaks. The $1,845 figure is the speech version; the no-speech version costs less, so confirm which version is in your cart before checkout.
