Freedom Scientific Focus 40 Blue (5th Gen)
The verdict
Why braille readers swear by it: 40 cells is the width that makes reading books and editing documents practical (20-cell displays like the Brailliant BI 20X, also in this catalog, mean constant panning). The 5th generation added a sturdier build and better battery life.
Freedom Scientific Focus 40 Blue (5th Gen) — about $2,795 (published list; current 5th-gen street pricing may differ) · star rating unverified in our research · Blind pick — a 40-cell refreshable braille display: the braille reader's equivalent of a monitor. It pairs over Bluetooth 5 with your iPhone, iPad, or computer and turns VoiceOver or JAWS output into braille under your fingers, with cursor-routing buttons above each cell.
Before you spend $2,795: iPhone's Braille Screen Input is free and worth trying first — it tells you whether you actually want braille input/output or whether speech covers your life. Buy the Focus when you read for hours, edit text, or work in places where audio is rude or impossible.
