Tech — the multiline braille tablet

APH Monarch

The verdict

The Monarch is a 10-line by 32-cell refreshable braille display — 320 cells at once — that shows braille and tactile graphics together, so a graph, a map, or a math layout can be explored as a whole instead of scrolled line by line. It is also a brailler, an e-book reader, a graphing calculator, and a word processor with email, with access to downloadable textbooks and APH's Tactile Graphics Image Library, and it is federal-quota eligible for students.

APH Monarch — about $15,500 (NFB member price $12,900 through December 31, 2026) · star rating unverified in our research (specialty-retailer product) · Blind pick — the first multiline braille tablet: ten lines of 32 cells that render tactile graphics integrated with braille, not just one line at a time.

Blind details

For a blind student or professional, the Monarch's case is the difference between reading in fragments and reading in pages: a full paragraph, a full equation, a full chart, all under the fingers at once. That is why the price is institutional, not personal — this is a purchase to route through a school, a vocational rehabilitation agency, or the NFB member price and financing, not a checkout-cart buy.

Honest caveats: at $15,500 this is the most expensive single product in the catalog, and the page says so plainly — do not buy it out of pocket without checking quota, VR, and NFB funding routes first. It weighs about five pounds, so it is a desk device, not a pocket one, and the Monarch 2.0 software update is due this fall. As of October 2026 APH listed it at $15,500 in stock, with the $12,900 NFB member price running through December 31, 2026.
