Sonos Roam 2 Portable Speaker

The verdict

The Roam 2 is a 6.61-inch speaker weighing 0.95 pounds, with up to 10 hours of listening per charge, an IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating, and both Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi. Over Wi-Fi it joins a Sonos multi-room system, supports Apple AirPlay 2, and takes voice commands through Amazon Alexa or Sonos Voice Control; a dedicated button switches between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modes.

Sonos Roam 2 Portable Speaker — about $179 at Amazon · 4.2★ · Mainstream pick — a pocket-size Sonos speaker that works over Bluetooth on the go and over Wi-Fi at home, with voice control built in.

It charges over USB-C and can also sit on a wireless charger (sold separately).

Blind details

For a blind shopper, the decision is ecosystem first, speaker second: this speaker earns its price if you already use Sonos at home, since it carries your system outside, but as a standalone Bluetooth speaker it costs more than rivals that sound as good. Before ordering, listen for reviews about the button layout and about bass at higher volumes, since the physical controls are small and the sound is tuned for clarity over thump. Confirm the color in the listing, since black, white, and three other colors share one page.

Support: Reachable by phone — Sonos publishes (800) 680-2345 for US support on support.sonos.com.

Honest caveats: $179 is the list price, and sale prices near $134 have been seen, so check for a deal before paying full price. The 4.2★ Amazon rating (about 1,717 reviews) is lower than some rivals, with bass-light reviews pulling it down. There is no Google Assistant on board, and 10 hours is a single day out, not a multi-day trip without charging.
