The hardware is ordinary; the AI is the single best camera story available to a blind person. Since the spring 2026 Gemini update, notifications read as descriptions — “person approaching front door,” “dog lying on patio” — using audio too (barking, footsteps), and with a subscription you can simply ask, “Were any packages delivered? What happened at my front door today?” and get described clips and a daily recap. The catch is a subscription catch: those description and history-search features need Google Home Premium (the advanced tier runs about $20/month or $200/year) — factor roughly $200 a year into the project. And the app flag, plainly: the Google Home app’s VoiceOver/TalkBack status is unverified — no blind-community confirmation was found. The spoken descriptions arrive as notifications, which is how most blind users will live with the system day to day.
